Scientists predict more days of dangerously-high heat indexes to come

Heat wave

Statewide, California averages 40 days a year with a heat index of 90 degrees or more. "Because of the humidity, we could see the heat index rise to between 105 and 110 degrees along the I-95 corridor".

In the meantime, temperatures will remain above normal in the Valley communities, although not quite as high as they've been since Thursday, when the heat wave started.

The report pulled together predictions about global temperature increases from 18 scientific sources, Dahl said.

Photo via ucsusaA recent study from the Union of Concerned Scientists warns that, without drastic intervention, Florida temperatures will rise to life-threatening highs as soon as 2036, thanks to climate change.

The report presents the potential number of 90-degree-plus, 100-degree plus and 105-degree-plus heat index days under those three scenarios, as well as one titled "off the charts".

The study, which was released Tuesday by the Union of Concerned Scientists, sheds light on some of the possible effects of climate change on parts of the United States, including Texas.

The conditions aren't expected to let up any time soon, as a "prolonged stretch of unsafe afternoon heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees is expected through the weekend", the National Weather Service's Raleigh office says.

Temperatures in the lower 90s, plus high humidity, usually results in a heat index near 100 degrees. "Nearly everywhere, people will experience more days of unsafe heat in the next few decades".

Blumenfeld added that the number of hot days in Minnesota will continue to vary year by year, while 10-year averages will likely begin showing a warming trend.

"We have little to no experience with "off-the-charts" heat in the USA", said Erika Spanger-Siegfried, co-author of the report and lead climate analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Under such conditions, it becomes hard for the human body to cool down and recuperate, which can take a cumulative toll over a period of several days.

The humidity will stick around as a high pressure system settles over the region, leading to temperatures climbing into the mid 90s in some areas.

"If we wish to spare people in the United States and around the world the mortal dangers of extreme and relentless heat, there is little time to do so and little room for half measures", the study states.
