S. Korea, Japan fail to resolve growing trade dispute

North Korea threatens to “destroy” South’s F-35 stealth fighter jets

The call was the latest twist in a dispute between the U.S. allies that could disrupt supplies of chips and displays from South Korean tech giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which count Apple and other smartphone makers as customers.

During the phone talks, Kang said Japan's trade restriction moves would cause damage to South Korean companies and have a negative impact on world trade as well as USA firms, according to South Korean Foreign Ministry.

Kim You-geun, deputy director of South Korea's presidential national security office, said South Korea has been thoroughly implementing United Nations sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

"We express deep regret that senior Japanese officials have been recently making irresponsible comments without presenting a clear basis for them, suggesting our government was violating export controls and not enforcing sanctions", Kim told a media briefing.

North Korea today said South Korea's planned deployment of new United States stealth fighter jets was an "extremely unsafe action" that would compel it to use "special armaments" to shoot them down.

"If the result of the investigation reveals that our government did something wrong, our government will apologize for it and immediately apply measures to correct it", said Kim, reading a prepared statement on live TV.

And Japanese officials said they defended their decision in Friday's talks. "We, on our part, have no other choice but to develop and test. special armaments to completely destroy the lethal weapons reinforced in South Korea".

North Korea on Thursday threatened South Korea with dire consequences over the purchase of cutting-edge F-35A stealth fighter jets from the U.S.

The South Korean government proposed on Friday, . that Seoul and Tokyo should be jointly investigated by an global body on their sanctions enforcement.

Lee says Japanese officials maintained Tokyo's stance that it won't negotiate over the trade curbs, which South Korea believes could hurt its export-dependent economy.

Japan is also threatening to drop South Korea from a "white list" of countries with minimum trade restrictions.

In response, Japanese officials explained the reason for the stricter export measures.

A foreign ministry official handling Asia-Pacific affairs is visiting Japan as Seoul steps up efforts to reverse Tokyo's recent export control measure through bilateral dialogue and USA mediation.

Relations between the American allies have always been strained over issues related to Tokyo's brutal 1910-45 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula.

Seoul sees Japan's curbs as retaliation for disputes over former Korean wartime labor.

Japan, for its part, has claimed the rulings are not in line with worldwide law and run counter to the foundation of friendly and cooperative relations between the two neighbors since the 1965 normalization of diplomatic ties.

Thursday's warning comes as North Korean and USA officials are expected to soon resume nuclear negotiations to follow up on their leaders' third meeting at the Korean border late last month. Articles appear on euronews.com for a limited time.
