Prosecutors allege Epstein paid $350,000 to potential witnesses

Days after insisting that he would not resign, United States (US) Secretary of Labour Alex Acosta is stepping down amid criticism of his role in a 2008 plea deal for millionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein in a child sex case.

This morning after the above cartoon was posted, it was announced that Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta has resigned.

The US attorney Geoffrey Berman wrote that Epstein "has a history of obstruction and manipulation of witnesses" including incidents when he was under investigation in the state of Florida in 2006, but most recently following the Miami Herald's publication of series of articles examining how that Florida investigation resulted in a controversially lenient 2008 plea agreement on state charges and a federal non-prosecution agreement. "It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case that is 12 years old rather than the incredible economy we have right now". In a 50-plus-minute lawyer-type rebuttal, Acosta argued his office had secured the best deal it could at the time and was working in the victims' best interests.

Epstein has been accused of not only abusing the underage girls himself but also of pimping them out to other wealthy and powerful men.

"If Mr. Acosta was truly concerned with the State's case and felt he had to rescue the matter, he would have moved forward with the 53-page indictment that his own office drafted", Krischer said in a statement.

"It would be selfish for me to stay in this position and continue talking about a case that is 12 years old".

"Mr. Acosta now joins the sprawling parade of President Trump's chosen advisors who have left the administration under clouds of scandal and corruption, leaving rudderless and discouraged agencies in their wake".

However, Mr Trump has said the pair fell out "12 or 15 years ago" and reiterated on Friday that he was "not a fan of Jeffrey Epstein". He has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and conspiracy and could face up to 45 years in prison. Epstein pleaded not guilty Monday to charges alleging he recruited and abused dozens of underage girls at his mansions in NY and Palm Beach, Florida, in the early 2000s.

Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he'd had just one meeting on the Epstein's attorneys because he had "been told" to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. Epstein had a social circle that over the years has included Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Britain's Prince Andrew.

Prosecutors said evidence against Epstein has grown since his arrest Saturday after several additional women identified themselves to the government as victims and dozens of individuals called prosecutors to convey information about Epstein and his crimes.

Trump, who has previously described Epstein as a "terrific guy" who "likes lovely women", also attempted to distance himself from the financier, saying he was "not a fan" and that the two had a "falling out" years ago.

How did Acosta defend the deal? Acosta said Epstein would have had an even lighter sentence if not for the deal.

They said victims support his detention and they know of no victim expressing support for bail.

He said that the labor secretary press conference Wednesday "did not play to good reviews", seeing as Acosta did not show a lot of heart or empathy, and refused to apologize to the victims.
