Philadelphia 76ers: Betting on Ben Simmons is a no-brainer

Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons will sign a maximum contract extension

Philadelphia 76ers star point guard Ben Simmons has reportedly made a decision on the massive contract extension offer he received earlier this summer.

The 6-foot-10 Australian was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft and won NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2017-18.

The extension secures Simmons in Philadelphia until 2025. The team recently locked Tobias Harris up and signed Al Horford to a four-year deal.

National Basketball Association all-star Ben Simmons has just landed himself an early birthday present.

The extension will come into effect in the 2020-21 season after the final year of his rookie deal.

Simmons will make a staggering $42m in the first year of his new contract.

He shot just 20.9-percent from mid-range last season. "I think the one thing I got a lot better at this season was leadership".

Philadelphia is 101-58 in regular-season games when Simmons plays.

It also surpasses the earnings of some of Australia's sporting greats including Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo, who signed a deal with Renault for $48.9 million or golfer Jason Day whose best year (between 2014-15) earned him almost $US10 million, GQ reported. He has had 22 triple-doubles in the last two seasons, tied for third most in the league with Denver's Nikola Jokic and trailing Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook (59) and the Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James (26). He's a generational talent, even without a jump shot.

And fortunately for all parties involved, Simmons will be afforded an opportunity to do so around the same starting five for at least the next three seasons.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
