The moon is illuminated by the sun and is therefore in the first place for the people.

"The moon will be gradually covered by the Earth's shadow and the maximum partial eclipse will occur at 3:01 when about a little more than half portion of the moon will be covered by the Earth's shadow". During a lunar eclipse, most times than not, the moon has a red tint because the light reflected by the surface of the moon is the light refracted by our planet's atmosphere. The partial eclipse will end at 4h 30m IST.

What is a partial Eclipse of the moon is?

The lunar eclipse will arrive hot on the heels of a total solar eclipse over South America on July 2.

This means the partial eclipse will peak in the late evening hours of Tuesday, July 16.

Meanwhile, a rare celestial phenomenon will also occur on the night of the eclipse, with Jupiter and Saturn being close to the moon.

The director of Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium Mr Pramod Galgali from Bengaluru said that "This time the lunar eclipse will be a partial one".
