Pakistani judge who jailed former PM sacked over blackmail claims

Pakistan: High Court orders removal of judge who convicted Nawaz Sharif after video leak

Reportedly, it has been resolved that an appropriate action would be taken once the matter is inspected in detail.

The directives were issued by IHC Acting Chief Justice Aamer Farooq in a letter to the registrar's office in which asked the latter to inform that Law Ministry that the judge has been relieved of his post and repatriated to his parent department, the Lahore High Court (LHC).

It says that regarding the changing condition, you may not perform your duty further and wait for further orders.

Judge Malik, after being removed from his position as an accountability court judge, was asked by the Ministry of Law to report to the Law Division.

The accountability court judge Muhammad Arshad Malik had announced the verdict in the two references namely Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment and sentenced the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader to seven years in prison and ordered him to pay $25million and Rs1.5 billion as fine.

He said that it was only after he refused to accept the lucrative bribes and give in to threats, the PML-N VP held the controversial presser where she released the "manipulated" videotapes, wherein, she had claimed, the judge had confessed to giving the verdict under pressure.

Malik claimed that in early 2018, an acquaintance named Nasir Janjua, who was associated with the PML-N, "implored" him to issue verdicts of acquittal in the references, saying that it was on his personal recommendation to then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that he (Malik) was appointed as judge in the accountability court.

Malik's removal on Friday prompted immediate calls by Sharif's PML-N party for the release of the 69-year-old former prime minister, who is now serving a seven-year jail sentence in the Kot Lakhpat jail in the eastern city of Lahore.

The judge also said that the PML-N, more notably Nawaz's family, tried to bribe him during Nawaz's trial and when he didn't cooperate, they threatened him. Therefore, he requested the court to summon the record, video footage of the press conference, from Pemra.

The allegations were made during a press conference where she aired a video that purported to show the judge admitting to legal fallacies in the case against her father and saying he was "blackmailed" into delivering the verdict.

Maryam said that the removal of the judge clearly means that the "honourable judiciary has accepted the truth".

"The decision against Nawaz Sharif should be dismissed and he should be released immediately", party spokeswoman Marriyum Aurangzeb said, adding that Sharif's conviction should be considered "void". He also called for an investigation into the video.
