Outrage over Arizona man who killed teen for listening to rap music

Arizona man fatally stabs teenager who was listening to rap because the music made him feel ‘unsafe

The teen ran outside and collapsed. When emergency responders arrived, a witness was trying to stop the bleeding from his neck. 17-year-old male victim died from injuries, suspect 27-year-old Michael Adams in custody.

If my music makes you feel unsafe, then walk the fuck away.

Defending the grisly slaying, Adams told authorities he chose to be "proactive rather than reactive" because people who listened to the genre have attacked him before, the news outlet reported. The white male told police that Elijah was playing rap music too loud, and he felt threatened by that.

Even though Adams said he only felt threatened by the music and not by Elijah, he still chose to be "proactive rather than reactive", police records state.

The story has caused controversy as the hashtag #JusticeForElijah started trending on Twitter. He said detectives on the case concluded that, even though Adams mentioned multiple races in his confession, the incident did not meet the threshold for hate crime charges. Prosecutors also noted that he had several previous felony convictions and a history of unprovoked violence. Once the murder charges were brought forward, however, Adams's lawyer, Jacie Cotterell, said that he was "set up for failure".

"He's been released into the world and left to fend for himself and two days later, this is where we are", she said in the interview.

Bill Lamoreaux, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Correction, however, had written in a statement that Adams "was not designated seriously ill" and was given contacts to give him care, housing and welfare, according to the Arizona Republic. One said Adams didn't say anything to the teen before stabbing him. Adams was arrested nearby and is now being held on $1 million bail, per Complex.

On Thursday, July 4, Al-Amin got off work from Subway around 11:30 p.m. and visited his girlfriend. "He suffers from what are some obvious mental illnesses; he's been ill served by the state", Cotterell told ABC15. "Out of the blue, somebody's going to do this to you - I can't understand".

"There's no excuse for this", Serina Rides said.

Areanna Ivery, who worked with Elijah at Taco Bell for a year, said they bonded over Elijah's passion. He had recently expressed interest in hotel management, perhaps inspired by his paternal grandfather, who owned hotels.

Adams told police that Elijah did not provoke the attack, and that he killed the teen because he was listening to rap music and he wanted to be "proactive rather than reactive". For some, the incident drew comparisons to the 2012 killing of Jordan Davis, who was shot at a gas station over an argument involving music coming from a vehicle carrying Davis and three other teens, in what became known as the "loud-music trial". Cory Booker, who's running for president, modified into as soon as one in every of many who demanded that the Department of Justice step in to investigate the homicide.
