Nicki Minaj cancels her concert at a Saudi Arabian music festival

Nicki Minaj performs at the 2018 BET Awards in Los Angeles

Just one week after her performance at the Jeddah World Fest was announced, Minaj said in a statement that "after careful consideration" she could no longer participate.

Hip-hop star Nicki Minaj has cancelled plans to perform in Saudi Arabia after "educating" herself on the allegations of human rights abuses plaguing the nation's royal family.

Jeddah World Fest, meant to be "one of the biggest music events ever staged in the Middle East", is scheduled to take place on July 18 at King Abdullah Sports stadium, in the coastal city.

In Saudi Arabia, gender segregation is still enforced in many areas of public life, while same-sex relationships are criminalised.

Final week some on social media described the singer's willpower to kind in Jeddah as hypocritical, contrasting her appearances at ecstatic pleasure events with Saudi Arabia's stance on ecstatic rights.

On Tuesday, the New York-based organization praised Minaj's decision to not perform at the concert.

The Jeddah World Fest is slated to take place on July 18 in Red Sea city, will also include performances from former One Direction member Liam Payne and DJ Steve Aoki.

"This is what leadership looks like", Halvorssen shares in a new press release.

The Human Rights Foundation issued a statement last week begging the "Bang Bang" hitmaker to withdraw from the festival as they couldn't understand why she would celebrate Gay Pride one week and then support Saudi Arabia another. Millions of people around the world are inspired by your devotion to human rights and human dignity. In December 2018, women - some without headscarves - drove themselves to a Formula-E vehicle race where thousands of young Saudis and hundreds of worldwide visitors partied into the night at concerts.

Others puzzled how her revealing outfits and recount lyrics would trudge over within the ultra-conservative kingdom.

Scrutiny of the country's human rights file intensified after the assassinate of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on the Saudi consulate in Istanbul final October.
