New poll shows Boris Johnson unstoppable in race for Downing Street

Jeremy Hunt the British foreign secretary in London on Wednesday

"The opposition stand with Sir John Major, who said that he would seek a judicial review in the courts if the new Prime Minister tried to suspend Parliament to deliver a no-deal Brexit".

His rival Jeremy Hunt, says the expert, gives the impression that he will offer more of Theresa May's failed policies, as he has spoken of renegotiating the Withdrawal Agreement, which the European Union has said they would not do.

Sharing screen space, Boris Johnson, Hunt's rival and the frontrunner in the leadership contest, said the United Kingdom would leave by October 31 "come what may", and that if this did not happen it would lead to "a huge erosion of trust in politics".

However he came under pressure for his comments over Britain's ambassador to the US Sir Kim Darroch in the row over the leak of his diplomatic dispatches.

"If we have a deal, if it's clear to us and to the Europeans there's a deal to be done, then of course I would go for that and if it took a little bit - you know, a few extra days - to get it through parliament".

Jeremy Hunt, the UK's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and also one of the two Conservative leadership contenders, has refused to guarantee that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union (EU) before Christmas, but said he "expects" it to happen by then.

But pressed on whether the United Kingdom would be out by Christmas, he said: "I'm not going to give you those commitments".

But the former foreign secretary insisted his comments in the debate had been "misrepresented" and denied withholding his backing.

But in contrast, his opponent Mr Johnson said it was "absolutely insane" to say that Britain is prepared to delay Brexit again.

He added: "I think that unfortunately what I said on that TV debate was misrepresented to Kim".

In her last TV interview with political editor Laura Kuenssberg, the PM spoke of "frustration" at no longer seeing Brexit through and underestimating how "entrenched" MPs had change into.

Mrs May conceded she could have talked to more colleagues to get her withdrawal deal through the House of Commons.

The final stage of the Conservative leadership election is now under way with party members having received their ballots. But she was sorry about having to leave when "there was more that I wanted to do".

"They think it is in the national interest that we have an ambassador in place", a source told The Times.

"There were moments when I sat here and thought I wish we'd got Brexit over the line - you know I wish we'd managed to achieve that".

Stride responded: "The Government do not believe that (suspending parliament) would be a desirable situation, not least because it would put the monarch in the awkward position of being involved in what is essentially a political decision given that it is Prorogation based on the advice of the Prime Minister, but ultimately granted by the Queen".

He said Parliament would be "willing to sit at weekends, will be willing to sit late, to do this" but that it "may take a few extra days and I would be willing to allow those days".
