Nepal Police said they have rescued 1,445 stranded people from different parts of the country, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Dhading, Rautahat, Chitawan and Siraha.

Rescue workers used heavy machinery to remove heaps of mangled steel and concrete from the muddied debris, and pulled 28 survivors from the rubble.

A total of 65 people died, while 30 others are listed as missing and 38 were injured by the torrential rains that have lashed many cities across Nepal since last Thursday, flooding homes in the southern Tarai plains and causing landslides in the hilly region of the Himalayan nation, the Efe news reported.

The Brahmaputra River, which flows thru India, Bangladesh and China, has burst its banks, swamping bigger than 1,800 villages in India's northeast Assam disclose, Reuters reported.

The officials said about 17,000 people have been forced to take refuge in 327 government-run relief camps.

In Cox's Bazar district, shelter to some 700,000 Rohingya refugees who fled violence in neighboring Myanmar, more than 100,000 people have been displaced.

Hundreds of houses have been damaged and thousands of people were displaced.

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warned of further floods and landslides as it predicted heavy rainfall would continue for two to three days in several parts of the country.

After an emergency Cabinet meeting on Sunday, officials decided to make the necessary arrangements to expedite rescue and relief operations in the districts hit by flooding and landslides.

India's monsoon season between June and September often sees heavy rains that are vital for agriculture, but can cause enormous destruction.

Officials in Nepal said flooding and landslides killed at least 67 people there. "We are also cautious about the risk of epidemics due to polluted water", Pokharel told AFP news agency.

Floods have also devastated much of the northeastern Indian state of Assam where four people died on Sunday after being swept away by sudden torrents.

A Red Crescent report tracking the humanitarian response in Bangladesh stated: "The current flood situation is likely to worsen in the coming days, as all major rivers in the affected districts are flowing above the danger mark with a rising trend".

In the overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district - home to almost one million Rohingya who have fled a military crackdown in Myanmar - almost 5,000 tarpaulin and bamboo homes were destroyed after heavy rains triggered mudslides on the hill slopes, according to a spokeswoman for the International Organisation for Migration.

According to the Nepal Meteorological Forecasting Division, the monsoon that had been in full swing since Friday gradually eased Sunday and the rainfall has been shifting toward the south.

Indian rescuers rushed to the scene after a multi-storey building collapsed following heavy rains near Kumarhatti, India.
