Metal drinking straw impales United Kingdom woman's brain, killing her

Tragedy Elena Struthers-Gardner

At the conclusion of an investigation on Monday, a United Kingdom coroner's office warned about the potential dangers of using fixed metal straws for people with mobility challenges after a disabled woman died from a traumatic brain injury caused by a metal straw.

Sixty-year-old Elena Struthers-Gardner collapsed in her kitchen in Dorset while holding one of those very poplar mason jar drinking glasses with the metal straws threaded through a screw top lid.

The 60-year-old was a retired jockey and had mobility difficulties stemming from a horse-riding accident.

"I did not hear her fall", said Mandy in a statement read by the coroner.

"She was making unusual gurgling sounds". After turning Elena over, Many saw the straw had gone through her eye-and it was still attached to the drinking glass. "I noticed the straw was sticking in her head".

Mandy then contacted 999 to request for an ambulance.

She described how her wife appeared to stop breathing while she was ringing for medical assistance. The lady on the phone asked me to turn her over. "I use metal straws every time I have a drink (disability) and have never poked myself in the eye".

She was sadly pronounced dead the following day at Southampton General Hospital.

For many, the solution to plastic straw restrictions is reusable options made of alternate materials like metal, paper, glass or silicone.

Interest in eco-friendly straws of various types has sky-rocketed in the United Kingdom in the last couple of years, following the broadcast of popular natural history series "The Blue Planet", which brought home the impact of plastic on the natural world.

"There was no alcohol present in the urine sample so intoxication did not contribute to the fall".

'Even if they don't end a life they can be very unsafe'.

'Clearly great care should be taken when using these straws, ' he said.

It caused multiple fractures on her spine and caused scoliosis, which left her prone to falling, according to The Daily Echo.

Speaking after the inquest, Mandy Struthers-Gardner said: 'I miss her very much, she was taken far too early.

Assistant coroner Brendan Allen said that "if the lid hadn't been in place, the straw would have moved away".

"There is no give in them at all", Allen told the court, according to The Independent. I hope this never happens to anyone else'.
