Merkel seen shaking for third time in weeks

German leader Angela Merkel seen shaking for third time in month

On that occasion she appeared unsteady and shook as she stood in the midday sun next to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom she was welcoming with military honours.

Merkel has repeatedly played down concerns over her health in recent weeks following high-profile episodes of shaking in public during meetings with other world leaders.

Mrs Merkel was last spotted shaking as she stood alongside President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at an indoor event where Germany's new justice minister was formally appointed.

She appeared to tremble as she received the Finnish PM Antti Rinne in Berlin.

She added: "This process is clearly not finished yet but there is progress and I must live with this for a while but I am very well and you don't need to worry about me".

Her spokesman later said she was OK and would attend the G20 summit in Japan.

"I think my statement that I am fine can find acceptance", she continued.

Mrs Merkel has carried on with her scheduled appointments since the incident, and no official explanation has been offered.

The chancellor's office has repeatedly dismissed concerns about her health.

Public figures' health is generally regarded as a private matter in Germany and the country's privacy laws are very strict on that type of information.

Angela Merkel hook back and forth as she stood outside and looked uncomfortable as she watched a military ceremony.

The second incident over a week later, which occurred indoors, she tried to explain with a psychological disposition.

She announced past year that once her term ends in 2021, she will not seek a fifth term, nor will she pursue any other political job thereafter. "Should the chancellor tell us how she really is doing?", read a headline on the homepage of Bild, the country's largest newspaper.

Were Merkel to be incapacitated, Steinmeier would appoint a cabinet minister as acting chancellor until parliament elects a new chancellor.

In the past, Merkel has joked that she is a "sleep camel" who can go days with just a few hours of sleep as long as she gets a full night of sleep at the weekend.

Mrs Merkel is now in her fourth term as chancellor, a role she first began in November 2005.
