Manhattan Power Outage Knocks out Subways, Elevators

BREAKING: Massive Power Outage In Midtown, Other Sections Of Manhattan, Thousands Affected

The FDNY responded to a transformer fire at W 64th Street and West End Avenue, the department announced on Twitter.

Reports of the outage were posted on social media, including photos of the subway stations in the dark and people stranded in stifling elevators. Traffic lights were not working along a stretch of Manhattan that extends up about a mile, and across from Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River, on Manhattan's far west side.

The outage comes on the anniversary of the 1977 New York City outage that left most of the city without power, triggering widespread looting and arson.

NBC reported that power had been out at Rockefeller center since 7 p.m.

"We're getting reports of power outages in station complexes throughout Manhattan", said MTA.info. "We're working to identify causes and keep trains moving".

Council Speaker Corey Johnson confirmed various train disruptions: "MTA is reporting that the outage is directly disrupting service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx".

However, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, tweeted to say that a manhole fire is responsible for the outage.
