Man, 22, arrested after climbing Buckingham Palace fence at 2am

Queen Elizabeth II

Buckingham Palace declined to comment, but royal insiders said the Queen is aware of the incident.

The intruder was not carrying any weapons and the incident is not being treated as terror-related, according to Scotland Yard.

It will raise serious security concerns for the palace, and comes nearly exactly 37 years after Michael Fagan famously broke into the Queen's bedroom.

Sources told British tabloids it took police nearly five minutes to apprehend the man, as it remained unclear whether or not he was armed.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that a man was detained in the early hours of this morning in Buckingham Palace's forecourt.

A 22-year-old man tried to break into Buckingham Palace last night while Queen Elizabeth was sleeping.

The Queen was said to be sleeping as the security breach took place around 2.00 am.

Prince Andrew said: "The police have a hard job to do balancing security for the Royal Family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong".

The royal source added: "This intruder got into the Palace nearly 37 years to the day since Michael Fagan ended up getting inside the Queen'sbedroom".

In 1982, Michael Fagan broke into the palace at 7.15am on July 9, climbing the walls of the residence and entering the Queen's bedroom.

It wasn't until four minutes later that he was apprehended by police, reports The Sun.

United Kingdom police have confirmed that a 22-year-old man was arrested after climbing over a fence at 2am London time (11am AEST) on Wednesday.

"He was determined to get inside the palace and was banging down the doors but, thank goodness, this time everything was locked up". This has led to fears that the 22-year-old was trying to copy Fagan as he would have known Her Majesty was in residence with her standard flying over the palace.

As the 31-year-old schizophrenic began to tell his monarch about his family problems, she pushed the panic button by her bed but got no response.

The Queen managed to raise the alarm when Fagan asked for a cigarette, allowing her to call for a footman who held him until police arrived.
