Kellyanne Conway stands to be held in contempt by House panel

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway talks to reporters outside the White House

Her question came during an informal press gathering Tuesday when reporter Andrew Feinberg asked her about President Donald Trump's tweets regarding freshmen Democratic congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Ilhan Omar.

After Conway shares that her ancestors are from Ireland and Italy, the reporter said, "My ethnicity is not relevant to the question I'm asking you".

"If the president was not telling these four congresswomen to return to their supposed countries of origin, to which countries was he referring", Feinberg asked Conway about Trump's Sunday morning tweetstorm.

"The Committee clearly knows that under long-standing, bipartisan precedent founded in the Constitution, a president's senior advisers can not be compelled to appear before Congress", Grisham's statement read.

"Today, Chairman Cummings and Democrats on the House Oversight Committee continued their purely political campaign to harass the President and his close advisors", she said.

During an appearance on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Monday evening, Conway and Hannity shared a couple laughs about the allegations and Hannity even addressed her insouciant demeanor.

The Office of Special Counsel, a federal watchdog agency, determined Conway broke the law numerous times by going on television in her official role and "disparaging Democratic candidates".

"She has repeatedly and flagrantly" abused her office, Cummings alleged.

"It is because you're asking about - he said originally, originally from, and you know everything he has said since", she said.

Cummings added on Monday that the White House has made things worse by "minimizing" the seriousness of the situation, and making it into "a light, offhand manner". They just want her "to testify about her violations of federal law".

"We're not requiring her to testify about advice she gave the president or about the White House policy decisions".

Conway is accused of violating the Hatch Act on a few different occasions.

Her husband, George Conway, meanwhile penned a column in the Washington Post titled: "Trump is a racist president".

Now, the committee is looking at contempt of Congress charges for Conway over her refusal to appear.

In a letter accompanying the report, special counsel Henry Kerner asked Trump to remove Conway to set an example for other federal employees.

Addressing reporters at the White House, Conway grew testy while fielding questions on Trump's motivations in singling out four women of color.

He told committee chairman Elijah Cummings that current and former White House officials were "absolutely immune" from being required to testify before Congress.
