Heat warnings issued in Upstate NY for 'dangerously hot temperatures'

'Death Valley' Heat Wave Striking US with Dangerous 100+ Temps

The first tweet said, "If you are wondering if it's going to be hot today, we are attempting to bake biscuits using only the sun and a auto in our parking lot". Heat indices will "surge past 100 degrees and approach 110s", the service reported. The heat index could hit 107 Friday and 110 on Saturday.

Safety-focused organizations have warned about the dangers of leaving children and pets in hot cars in sweltering weather.

The oppressive heat wave expected to threaten millions this weekend will bring record high temperatures during the day, as well as at night, making it especially risky. Washington is forecast to have three consecutive nights with low temperatures in the low 80s, from Saturday morning through Monday morning.

The most memorable aspect of this heat wave will be the lack of relief at night, especially in urban areas where the urban heat island prevents temperatures from falling quickly overnight.

An excessive heat watch is in effect for the weekend, and is expected to be upgraded to a warning.

The heat and humidity may cause heat stress while outside. Cooling centers, air-conditioned spaces where people can get away from the heat and rehydrate themselves with bottled water, are also being organized: New York City is activating approximately 500 cooling centers.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Friday and Saturday for most of southern Ontario and all of the Greater Toronto Area.

Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.

Outdoors workers and athletes, and their supervisors and coaches, should take extra precautions to prevent overexertion.

Such high overnight lows will increase the risk to public health from this hot weather.

After just 10 minutes on a day when the outside temperature is 80 degrees, the inside temperature can reach 90 degrees. "While the actual temperature may be higher in Death Valley, when compared to the nation's capital, humidity levels near the Chesapeake Bay will be substantially higher than that of the deserts", AccuWeather explained.
