Harry Styles in Talks to Play Prince Eric in Disney's Little Mermaid

While Prince Eric doesn't have any songs in the original The Little Mermaid, this is big sign that will change in the remake.

And now, we have our answer: it'll be Harry Styles.

Styles is most popular for his time in the popular boyband, One Direction, and he played a minor role in Christopher Nolan's war drama, Dunkirk.

Alan Menken, who wrote the score to the original 1989 animated film, will return to the remake and create new music alongside Tony Award victor Lin-Manuel Miranda, who worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns.

Halle Bailey has already been cast as Ariel and there are reports Melissa McCarthy could play Ursula.

Further confirmed casting includes 12-year-old Room star Jacob Tremblay as Flounder while Crazy Rich Asians actress and comic Awkwafina is set to play seagull Scuttle. Styles also earned a spot on the shortlist for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Elvis biopic, though the title role ultimately went to Austin Butler.

Alan Menken is remastering his original "The Little Mermaid" score for the film and is writing a song with Moana composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

As for Prince Eric's role in The Little Mermaid, he falls in love with Ariel after she saves him from drowning.

Production for The Little Mermaid is anticipated to begin in early 2020. Director Rob Marshall has a background in musicals as well, directing movies like Chicago, Into the Woods, and Mary Poppins Returns. That's the classic 1989 animated film that Disney is now in the process of turning into its next live-action reimagining.
