Google’s Shoelace is its event-based "Social Interaction Platform"

Google’s taking another crack at building a social network

As fun as it is poke Google for past failures in the social network space, amid growing concerns that time spent on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram is having a negative impact on our lives, it's kind of refreshing to see a social network whose main objective is to encourage people to spend less time on said network and more time actually doing things. The company gave the idea another try in 2011 by launching Google+.

Unlike most social networks, which let people connect with others all around the world, Shoelace is region-based, and is starting out with a trial among a handful of communities in New York City. There is no web version, while the app is available on Android 8.0 and up, and iOS 11 and up.

It's been five months since the shutdown of Google Plus, and Google have already begun public testing of Shoelace- their new social interaction platform.

The new social app is created by Area 120, which is Google's development laboratory.

Conversely, if you don't have any of your own events to suggest, users can designate their interest in a variety of categories, which Shoelace will use to recommend a number of "hand-picked" activities the app thinks you might like, so you won't have any excuse for saying there's nothing fun to do ever again. Well, as per the website, "The whole premise of Shoelace is to tie people together based on their interests - like two laces on a shoe". They will probably enlist community organizers and mangers to help both the curation and the And to protect people's privacy, there will be verification before you can join, although what that looks like still isn't clear right now. "This will help us determine what works and what doesn't as we work to make the app available to more people".

As Android Police points out, Shoelace is rather similar to a previous Google attempt at an event organizer called Schemer. These activities are called "Loops".

If you're not part of the select few to be invited to the social media site, you can fill out a request to bring it to your area.
