Gears 5 Boss Clarifies Game's Stance On Smoking And Tobacco

Gears 5 will be a completely smoke-free game

According to a report from Variety, the decision to go smoke-free was made after the not-for-profit anti-smoking organisation Truth Initiative approached Turner Broadcasting.

Depictions of smoking are found in some of the most popular video games.

"I've always been anti-smoking and have pushed back on having it in Gears since day 1", Fergusson clarified via Twitter, reminding players that there was no smoking in Gears 4, either. From what we've read, it sounds as though tobacco use was originally in Gears 5 before being ultimately removed at the behest of Truth and ELeague.

Microsoft and the Coalition have confirmed that they will stop making smoking characters and will withdraw any reference to tobacco in future deliveries of the saga.

The Coalition and Microsoft have announced that Gears 5 will have 60hz servers and universal weapon tuning.

Variety first reported that the move came after United States anti-smoking-initative Truth Initative approached American broadcasting company Turner, who have the current broadcast rights to Gears as an eSport and the latter working with Gears developer The Coalition to remove all references. "I didn't want to glamorize something that is addictive and kill you", Fergusson says.

A statment from head of studio Rod Fergsson reportedly said "I've seen firsthand the devastating impact of smoking". He said there is "no censorship" because Gears 5 never had smoking to begin with; you can't remove what was never there. Gears 5 will debut in stores on September 10, and although it will remain a product not suitable for minors, due to its content in explicit violence and inappropriate language, it will not count on tobacco as an element that can be praised in any way.

A representant from Xbox Games noted that the decision was entirely made by The Coalition. Gears 5 is going to be a Mature-rated title, sure, but kids are ultimately going to play it, and there'll undoubtedly be some young players involved in esports around the title. We'll have more news on the game for you as it comes in.
