British Parliament declared an environmental emergency in April, but Extinction Rebellion activists said not enough has been done since. The boats are meant to symbolise the inevitability of rising sea levels.

In London, protesters sat outside the Royal Courts of Justice with a blue boat where the theme was "climate justice" in solidarity with climate activists around the world.

South Wales Police said they were working with Cardiff Council in order to minimise delays to public transport across the city, and advised motorists to consider alternative routes due to the road closure.

Montreal police say 25 people were arrested following a five-hour sit-in at a climate protest outside Premier Francois Legault's office on Saturday.

Extinction Rebellion said the protests would run all week and include blocking specific locations, bridges and roads.

Members of Extinction Rebellion say today's action - which is taking place in London, Bristol, Cardiff and Glasgow as well as Leeds - is a response to "the threat of climate breakdown and ecological collapse".

A Met police spokesman said the force "absolutely recognise the right for people to protest, but it ought to be recognised that we must balance this with the rights of others to go about their daily lives".

Campaigners in Glasgow blocked Trongate at the intersection of Gallowgate and High Street with a 25ft purple boat.

Meanwhile, on Victoria Bridge in the centre of Leeds, activists unveiled a yellow boat.

My eldest child is nine years old and for each of those nine years I've watched her future get steadily worse while everyone waits for everyone else to do something on climate change.

The movement would like to see more "meaningful measures" from the government on reducing carbon emissions to net zero, protecting biodiversity, and criminalising actions that harm the environment.
