Two-thirds of the United States is set to experience a "dangerous and widespread" heat wave this weekend, as temperatures are expected to rise above 100 degrees in many parts of the midwest and the East Coast, affecting millions of people.

The watch will be in effect from 11 a.m.to 9 p.m. on Saturday for all of MA, excluding Cape Cod and the Islands.

DANGEROUS HEAT AHEAD: Showers and storms are likely for the first half of the day on Thursday although they will be confined to the eastern half of our area.

Heat indices from 105 degrees to as high as 112 degrees are possible both afternoons, according to the weather service. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Dauphin, Lebanon, York & Lancaster counties until 10 PM this evening. The highest values are expected to occur across north central Kansas.

High temperatures in the middle 90s to around 100 degrees will combine with humid conditions to bring afternoon heat indices into the 103 to 115 degree range. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

"Plan to spend more time in air conditioned or well-ventilated places", the NWS advises.

"To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments". The NWS offers tips on how to beat the heat and stay cool, as well as how to respond to a heatwave. "Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911".
