Elon Musk: Tesla Will ‘Most Likely’ Bring Self-Driving Chip Upgrade

Tesla Autopilot

The new chip has already been shipping in Model S, X, and Model 3 vehicles. Tesla says it offers 21 times the performance of the Nvidia chips it replaces - a claim Nvidia disputes.

Tesla will likely start installing the chip it created to one day make its cars autonomous on vehicles that don't already have it near the end of this year, CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday.

Tesla's high-powered in-house-designed "Full Self-Driving" chip has been in production for a while now, and it's been fitted as standard to new Teslas since early 2019.

The new, Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer is also fitted with two such chips for redundancy, as are all the other critical features such as power delivery.

For those of you out there who happen to own an older Tesla vehicle - or just over half a million people - there's some good news for you. Tesla announced the new chip costs 20 percent less than its previous "HW2+" Nvidia, even though is way more powerful. The add-on package gives drivers access to Tesla's Navigate on Autopilot feature which guides the driver to make lane changes, navigate highway interchanges and even proactively exit highways.

Once Tesla has developed the necessary software, the chip is created to allow the electric-car maker's vehicles to drive without human assistance.

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk is "unhappy" with the progress of developing fully autonomous vehicles, and at least 11 members of the software team have left in the past few months, according to a Tuesday report on The Information that cited one current and one former Tesla employee.
