Dr. Leana Wen Out as Planned Parenthood President

Trump Family Planning

Wen, in a Twitter post, said she learned that Planned Parenthood's board "ended my employment at a secret meeting".

The federal government's $260 million family planning program serves 4 million women with low-priced or free health care services, including mammograms and Pap smears.

"We were engaged in good faith negotiations about my departure based on philosophical differences over the direction and future of Planned Parenthood", Wen said.

Planned Parenthood says it won't comply with a Trump administration rule that bars taxpayer-funded family planning clinics from referring women for abortions. Planned Parenthood, for example, would be stripped of around $60 million in federal funding for its clinics, which refer for abortion services and are co-located with abortion facilities.

"Alexis is a renowned social justice leader, lifelong political organizer, and a tireless advocate for reproductive rights and access to quality, affordable health care", PPFA board Chair Aimee Cunningham and PPAF Board Chair Jennie Rosenthal said in a joint statement.

"I am proud to step in to serve as Acting President and facilitate a smooth leadership transition in this critical moment for Planned Parenthood and the patients and communities we serve", Johnson said in a statement.

Wen took over for as president from Cecile Richards, a seasoned Democrat operative, last Septemeber.

Republican-led legislatures have enacted unconstitutional abortion bans at the state level from OH to Alabama.

The pro-life movement, which opposes abortion, celebrated the Trump administration's move and the court's decision.

HHS said no judicial orders now prevent it from enforcing the rule while the litigation proceeds.

Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, sued the administration, along with 20 states and the District of Columbia, in an attempt to stop Health and Human Services, or HHS, from diverting Title X family planning funding going to abortions. Planned Parenthood clinics have always been a target for religious and social conservatives because the clinics separately provide abortions. The program provides about $260 million a year in grants to clinics.

Title X serves about 4 million women annually through independent clinics.

No money has been cut from Title X as a result of this change, and funds will still be available for eligible clinics.

In a letter to her colleagues at Planned Parenthood, Wen said she had believed its primary mission was to be a health care organization, more so than an advocacy organization.
