Bill Gates thinks Steve Jobs was a wizard

Steve Jobs Magically Saved Apple By “Casting Spells”: Bill Gates

Late Steve Jobs who co-founded Apple was a master at "casting spells" to keep employees motivated and working long hours, according to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Gates was interviewed by a CNN for a programme on leadership that was scheduled for broadcast on Sunday.

"I have yet to meet any person who in terms of picking talent, hyper-motivating that talent, and having a sense of design of 'Oh this is good, this is not good.' So he brought some incredibly positive things, along with that toughness", Gates said.

Gates said people often emulate the negative elements of the Apple founder's personality, but Jobs was also a unique leader who took Apple from near-death to its pedestal as the most valuable company in the world (before Microsoft usurped that crown this year).

He referred to himself as a "minor wizard" who could see through Jobs's "spells".

The legacy created by Steve Jobs by Apple is not just legendary it is unmatchable.

Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in 2011. Citing Jobs's opening in 1988 of the NeXT laptop, which ultimately "completely failed", Gates stated, "it was such rubbish, and yet he mesmerized...people". This is not good, ' " Gates said. His previous role at the company was as its COO, and he's most well-known within the company for logistics rather than products.

Gates spoke fondly about Jobs, who was both his rival and collaborator at instances and expressed admiration for his expertise.

Today, as a philanthropist with a fortune estimated by Bloomberg Billionaires Index to be $107 Bn, Gates acknowledges that he is more easy-going about work in general.

Apple chief design officer Jony Ive who worked at the iPhone maker for nearly 30 years chose to move on last month and form an independent design firm called LoveFrom. "We're not going to put more money into that" he said.

When asked about his own leadership style, Gates responded, "Other than a DOJ deposition I gave, no one ever said that when I went out to talk to the press or customers, that I was rude or abrupt or commanding".
