Biden says he was wrong in comments about segregationists

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and former Vice President Joe Biden

"Part of the impetus of the conversation was the statements that the Vice President made about his work with segregationists and that was the subject of conversation for days on end, so if he and his team weren't prepared for the topic I don't know what to say about that", she said.

"Growing up here in SC, that's meaningful to us", she said.

Garcia opted not to question either Biden or Harris about their recent back-and-forth over busing as a way to combat racial segregation in America's schools, and neither candidate mentioned the flap on their own.

Biden also is highlighting his eight years as Obama's vice president, from 2009 to 2017.

Asked in Iowa whether she would support federally mandated busing in 2019 to combat de facto segregation that remains in some USA school systems, Harris replied, "I think of busing as being in the toolbox of what is available and what can be used for the goal of desegregating America's schools".

Still, this weekend was Biden's second time in the first-in-the-south primary state since the furor unfolded.

The state senator Dick Harpootlian, backing Biden, said he had heard from some voters that they felt Harris's debate attack was "disrespectful". He was one of the great presidents of the United States of America, and I'm exhausted of hearing about what he didn't do, ' Biden said of Obama.

Kamala Harris raised almost $12 million during the second quarter of the Democratic primary - giving her a financial boost after a fiery debate exchange with Joe Biden.

"I strongly believe you should judge a society based on how it treats its children, and one of the greatest expressions of love that a society can extend to its children is to invest in their education", Harris said during the town hall.

In South Carolina, an early-voting state in the nominating contests that kick off next February, Biden delivered a speech responding to criticism by Harris about his track record on race. Overall, Harris raised more than $23 million since launching her campaign in January.

'Sure they were going to come after me.

Biden noted that he and Harris have similar views of how to combat modern school segregation and said his goal in the 1970s and today is "to get to the root cause of segregation", which in many cases stems from housing discrimination.

"We can not rewrite history about what segregationists were doing at that time on a number of issues", she added. We didn't agree on much of anything. Some had concluded that her strategy was to avoid expending resources in largely white Iowa and New Hampshire and instead hope to catch fire in states with more African American voters. "That is one of my highest priorities, and we have got to deal with that".

Ahead of his SC stops, Biden's campaign said he planned to say his lengthy public service career "will be weaponized against him by opposition researchers", would pledge to "take on those attacks directly" and would not allow his record "to be distorted and mischaracterized". Joe Biden is a "moderate" like Trotsky was a moderate compared to Lenin.

It's first Southern state to vote in next year's primary and a crucial proving ground for candidates seeking support of black Democrats.

"If you look at the issues I've been attacked on, almost every one of them is for something well before 2008", Biden said, according to prepared remarks. According to a recent CNN poll, the California senator's support jumped to 17%, putting her second behind Biden's 22%.

"He won't get caught flat-footed again", said Dan Callahan, chairman of the Buchanan County Democratic Party. "I mean, that's one of the things that we learned in the campaign".
