Apple updates Mac to fix faulty video conferencing app

Pedestrians use crosswalk in large metropolis

"The little adhesive camera covers available by the dozens at every computer conference or for a couple dollars on Amazon are a much better solution that relying on software to do the right thing", said Bailey. "We appreciate our users' patience as we continue to work through addressing their concerns", the report quoted a Zoom spokesperson as saying. As per TechCrunch, Apple has pushed an automatic update to remove the vulnerable component that the web server used to streamline access to the video conferencing app; Zoom while installing it.

The flaw only affects computers running Apple's MacOS, because Windows computers manage connections in a different way, the report says.

The challenge with something like this Zoom vulnerability is that users might simply be unaware of any danger.

Video conferencing service provider Zoom confirmed July 10 that it will release a patch for a vulnerability that allowed hackers to hijack peoples' webcams, according to Wired.

He demonstrated that any website can open up a video-enabled call on a Mac with the Zoom app installed.

According to Apple, the automatically-deployed update removes the hidden web server, which Zoom quietly installed on users' Macs when they installed the app, TechCrunch reported on Wednesday.

The researcher says he contacted Zoom on March 26, giving the company a public disclosure deadline of 90 days. In a move that Daring Fireball's John Gruber justifiably describes as "criminal", it seems that Zoom leaves unsafe pieces of itself behind, in the form of a local web server, even after a user would have every reason to believe they've uninstalled it.

'Once the update is complete, the local web server will be completely removed on that device'. It seems that Zoom thinks that asking a user if they want to join a meeting is a "poor user experience".

"This is a good example of why you should never overlook physical security", explained Lamar Bailey, senior director of security at Tripwire. It shouldn't affect functionality other than requiring your permission to launch the app.
