Amazon Music Unlimited gaining subscribers faster than Spotify and Apple

Amazon Music Growth Outpaces Spotify, Apple Music

Amazon's current subscriber count to its music services sits at about 32 million. By comparison, Spotify grew its subscriber base by 25 percent a year ago, to about 100 million subscribers.

Spotify are launching in Russian Federation after teasing them for years, and they're taking Apple Music on at a price level.

The number of people subscribing to Amazon Music Unlimited has grown by about 70 per cent in the past year, according to people briefed on its performance. Amazon's is the oldest user base, followed by Apple and then Spotify. But its competitive pricing structure as well as the popularity of the Alexa voice assistant are also contributing to the rapid growth of subscribers. For example, if you ask Alexa to play David Bowie's "Heroes" on a Sonos One speaker, Amazon's streaming music service will be used. That said, Amazon, of all companies, wants to increasingly be seen as a streaming music player and now has some fresh ammunition to tout in that regard.

Spotify and Apple Music are facing increasingly tougher competition from Amazon when it comes to adding new paid subscribers to their services.

"We're not battling for the same customers as everyone else", Amazon's Steve Boom confirmed. Accordingly, per the Midia data, 14% of Amazon Music users are actually older than 55, so there's that. That's especially true if you have Amazon Prime (it's only $8 per month for Prime subscribers) or if you only use an Amazon smart speaker to listen ($4 per month), which may also help the service grow. In the words of the Amazon Executive, "For the industry to reach its full potential, we can't just look at 15 to 22-year-olds".
