Afghanistan rivals resume talks for peace with Taliban in Doha

Intra-Afghan dialogue – end of war more likely than ever

Ghani, who has been conspicuously quiet about the upcoming intra-Afghan dialogue, has consistently demanded Taliban talk directly with the government.

The veteran USA diplomat has also been touring the region in an attempt to gain support for the peace process in Afghanistan.

The two-day summit, facilitated by Germany and Qatar, is an "historic opportunity for all of them to bridge trust deficit, which will help pave the way for direct peace negotiations between Afghan government and the Taliban", said Asadullah Zaeri, a spokesman of the country's High Peace Council.

This attack occurred on the same day that a round of intra-Afghan peace talks commenced in Qatar between the insurgents and a delegation including members of the Kabul government taking part in an unofficial and personal capacity.

The earlier rounds of US-Taliban talks did not yield any substantial result, but hopes for a breakthrough are high this time around.

The U.S. and Qatar have welcomed the talks.

In a tweet on Saturday, U.S envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, who has been holding peace talks with the Taliban to end the 18-year war in Afghanistan since last year, said the latest round of discussions were the "most productive session" to date.

Meanwhile the U.S. ambassador to Kabul John Bass has said that the firstintra-Afghan talks which are scheduled to take place in three days in Qatar iscritical to leverage the peace process in the country.

He also said the Taliban "want to show the global community and the Afghans in Qatar that they can carry out attacks even in the cities.

Afghanistan's future can only be determined by Afghans", German envoy said on Twitter.

An agreement with the Taliban is expected to have two main pillars - a United States withdrawal from Afghanistan and a commitment by the militants not to offer sanctuary to extremists.

"Essentially the four items we have been talking about ever since we started (are) terrorism, withdrawal of foreign troops, inter-Afghan negotiations and dialogue, and ceasefire".

"The final destination for Afghans is peace, we have suffered for years, especially innocent people". From our perspective that means an intra-Afghandialogue that includes everyone with society and also formal intra-Afghannegotiations, the US Ambassador to Kabul John Bass said. Despite the violence, both the Taliban and United States have been positive about their engagement.

"We believe that there is collectively an incredible amount of intelligence, thinking about Afghanistan and what goes on, hopefully coming together will come up with its own solutions", he added.
