Uber eyes drones for food delivery, unveils new autonomous car

Your next Uber Eats delivery could arrive via drone.

WASHINGTON: Uber said it plans to speed up restaurant meal delivery by using drones for its Uber Eats service, in the latest effort by the ride-hailing giant to disrupt the transport sector.

Uber said it has received regulatory approval to begin testing drone deliveries in San Diego, California.

After describing the auto, they go on to say that when paired with Volvo's vehicle platform, Uber's self-driving system may one day allow [emphasis mine] for safe, reliable autonomous ridesharing without the need for a Mission Specialist.

The Uber Eats drone announcement is just one of the updates out of Uber's "Elevate" arm, which is dedicated to pursuing Uber's aerial travel business.

In the future, the company wants to land drones atop parked vehicles near delivery locations and secure them to the vehicle for the final mile of the delivery.

'We believe that Uber is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge as we're able to leverage the Uber Eats network of restaurant partners and delivery partners as well as the aviation experience and technology of Uber Elevate'.

Unlike other drone delivery services, Uber isn't planning to initially deliver the orders directly to customers' homes.

Additional restaurant partners will be added to the trial later this year, including local restaurant Juniper and Ivy.

Also Wednesday, Uber announced that it would team with Volvo Cars to launch its newest self-driving vehicle.

Various sensors will allow Uber's self-driving system to safely operate and manoeuvre in urban areas, the company said.

"Working in close cooperation with companies like Volvo is a key ingredient to effectively building a safe, scalable, self-driving fleet", said Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber Advanced Technologies Group in a statement.

This follows several prototypes which were built with the goal of sussing out the companies' self-driving vehicle development efforts.
