Trump renews Mexico tariff threat amid row over migration deal

Mexico's peso rallied against the dollar in response to news that the US had dropped threatened tariffs on imports from the country

He has suggested that the US and Mexico agreed to things beyond what was written in the joint declaration Friday announcing Mexico would deploy thousands of national police to the border region, and would host some Central Americans who reached the USA but whom American authorities want to make wait outside the country as their immigration cases proceed.

Speaking to reporters, he refused to give details of the plans to curb migration, saying that he wanted to let Mexico announce it "at the right time".

The Mexico Daily News reported over the weekend that the Mexican government will build barracks just north of the Guatemala border in Suchiate, Chiapas, that will be used to house National Guard troops.

President Donald Trump said on Monday the United States had signed another portion of an immigration and security deal with Mexico that would need to be ratified by Mexican lawmakers.

That is different from a long-standing USA demand that Mexico be declared a safe place for asylum seekers, requiring them to seek refuge in Mexico if they passed through the country on the way to the US.

"Mexico is doing a great job at the border, really helping us", he said Tuesday.

"For a long time, for many years, people tried to get what we got in a period of a couple of days, and they couldn't get it".

"In the meeting with the vice president of the United States, they were insistent on the safe third country issue", Ebrard told a press conference. "I can tell you that the team here at the State Department believes full-throatedly that this an important set of agreements, important set of understandings, one that we'll continue to work on".

He did not go into details, but Mexico said it had agreed to discuss one of Trump's top demands, a so-called "safe third country agreement" - in which migrants entering Mexican territory must apply for asylum there rather than the United States - if the flow of undocumented Central Americans continues. They said they're fleeing poverty and violence in Honduras and the U.S.is still their destination regardless of Mexico's plans.

But Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico's foreign minister, said on Monday that "there is no other thing beyond [the previously announced terms]".

"The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the US on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended", Trump said on Twitter on Friday evening.

But the president appeared to be making a reference to talks over how Mexico handles Central American migrants who travel through the country to claim asylum in the U.S.

He said the agreement that he waved around would go into affect at his discretion.

He also warned Mexico he would put his threat of tariffs into place if they did not decrease the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border. "And that was a big victory for us", he said.

There was no sign of a new deployment in the southern border town of Tapachula, the entry point for the large migrant caravans that have crossed Mexico in recent months, said AFP correspondents. Pompeo acknowledged that it was "something that we pressed for with them throughout the time of the negotiations". I'm not going to say one way or another, ' he said.

The president called the story "fake news" and insisted the deal was brand new.
