Tanushree Dutta reacts to Nana Patekar’s sexual harassment case closure

Former Miss Universe contestant Tanushree Dutta first alleged in 2008 that Patekar had touched her inappropriately during the making of a romantic comedy the same year.

Indian police said Thursday they had no evidence to support the allegations of sexual harassment made by an actress against a Bollywood star a year ago that sparked the country's #MeToo movement.

When the police say they cannot find evidence, this could either mean that the evidence does not exist, or that it exists but the investigation was poor or hard and the police, thus, did not bring the evidence to the prosecution.

"I have not received any official information from Oshiwara police station about classification of offence (summary report) from the police on behalf of Tanushree Dutta".

News agency ANI reported that the Mumbai police had filed a "B Summary" report in the case, which is usually done when the investigation can not be continued due to lack of evidence supporting the complaint.

Reacting to Nana Patekar's clean chit, Tanushree Dutta, who now lives in the United States, issued a statement.

"Police acted negligently to protect Nana Patekar, many witnesses statement not yet recorded, one Shyni (Shetty's) statement recorded partly, police have not investigated properly so we are opposing summery reports and also going to file writ petition before Bombay High Court".

Times Now reported meanwhile that Tanushree was going to continue her fight for justice, and could challenge the closure of the case in court. Being a woman in India this is something we all have got used to. Our witnesses have been silenced by intimidation and fake witnesses have been put forth to weaken the case. What was the rush to file a B summary report when all of my witnesses have not even recorded their statements yet??

Dutta's complaint against Patekar previous year sparked a nationwide '#MeToo' movement on social media.

She urged everyone to boycott Patekar movies, warning that it will be their bad karma if they continued to watch or support his films.

Based on her complaint, a case was registered against Mr. Patekar and three others - choreographer Ganesh Acharya, the film's producer Samee Siddiqui and director Rakesh Sarang - for allegedly molesting Ms. Dutta on the sets of the movie. She said reportedly asserted that that he tried to forcefully introduce intimate steps into the choreography of a special song in the film.

The accused were booked under IPC Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act meant to insult the modesty of a woman), but no arrest was made so far.
