Sudan talks to resume as opposition halts strikes

Activist Protesters will keep using peaceful tactics

The Sudanese protesters who succeeded in driving President Omar al-Bashir from power last month say their revolution won't be complete until they have dismantled what many describe as an Islamist-dominated "deep state" that underpinned his 30-year rule.

Jalab and Ardol were detained after meeting Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed in Khartoum on Friday for talks aimed at reviving negotiations between Sudan's rulers and protesters.

The opposition has responded by declaring civil disobedience that has curtailed life in the capital. The military council has confirmed 61 deaths, including three members of the security services.

Lieutenant General Jamaleddine Omar, a military council member, said on state television late on Sunday: "The military council has chose to reinforce the presence of armed forces, RSF [Rapid Support Forces] and other regular forces to help normal life return".

One week ago, security forces violently swept away a camp where demonstrators had been holding a sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum, with over 100 people killed.

The council also called for an immediate halt to attacks against civilians and stressed the importance of upholding human rights - a week after Russian Federation and China blocked a similar draft statement on the crisis.

The alliance said in a statement it would suspend the strike from Wednesday until further notice, though it encouraged people to remain mobilized for possible further action.

"This happened despite their rejection of the forceful deportation", the statement said, adding that the move showed the military council's intention "not to hand power to the civilians and not to reach peace".

The leader said the opposition Freedom and Change alliance planned to nominate Abdullah Hamdouk, a former executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, as new prime minister, Reuters reported.

On Tuesday, the Ethiopian mediator between the two sides said that talks on restoring a civilian administration would begin soon.

Hollywood star and activist George Clooney urged the global community to take action against the generals behind the crackdown.

Top U.S. diplomat for Africa Tibor Nagy was due to travel to Sudan this week to push for the resumption of talks on a democratic transition as well as to urge an end to a bloody crackdown on protesters, said the State Department in Washington on Monday.

Also on Tuesday, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said RSF forces attacked a market the previous day in the town of Deleig in central Darfur.

The Janjaweed, a militia accused by rights groups of widespread abuses at the height of Darfur's conflict which started in 2003, have been absorbed in Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
