SpaceX targets Wednesday for launching Canada's RADARSAT Constellation Mission

The SpaceX Falcon 9

Space X is a U.S. private space company which plants to launch Canada's RADARSAT constellation from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Wednesday morning.

The three Radarsat satellites lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg at 7:17:10 a.m.

Following stage separation, Falcon 9's first stage returned to land on SpaceX's Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg Air Force Base. In near-earth space, they will replace the satellite system RADARSAT-1 and RADARSAT-2, which operated from 1995 to 2013 and from 2007 to present, respectively.

That provided a wonderful image of the Falcon 9 bursting through the layer of fog as it ascended to orbit (above). After that launch, the Falcon 9 landed on one of SpaceX's drone ships off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic, but now it's ready to make a ground landing on the opposite coast.

Viewers can watch the launch of the satellites live in the player above. After takeoff, SpaceX will attempt to land its rocket on a landing pad next to the vehicle's launch site.

Data pulled from the satellites will be used for a variety of information, including monitoring climate change, ice melt and maritime surveillance to help the country's defense force, according to the agency's website.

The launch is scheduled for a window beginning at 7:17 a.m.

The spacecraft were created to operate in the same orbital plane at an altitude of about 373 miles (600 kilometers), separated from each other by about 9,072 miles (14,600 kilometers) while circling the globe in about 96 minutes.

The RADARSAT Constellation Mission is Canada's newest generation of radar Earth Observation satellites that will add to a superior comprehension of Canada's property and natural resources.

"Built by MDA, a Maxar company, the three-satellite configuration of the RCM will provide daily revisits of Canada's vast territory and maritime approaches, including the Arctic up to four times a day, as well as daily access to any point of 90 percent of the world's surface", SpaceX wrote in a mission description online.
