Space station opening to visitors

NASA to allow tourists on ISS in 2020

The fact that NASA is opening its International Space Station is for commercial business for the U.S industry innovation. Nasa reports the first space station port for commercial activities is already underway.

"We are announcing the ability for private astronauts to visit the Space Station on USA vehicles and for companies to engage in commercial profit-making activities on the station".

NASA Deputy ISS Program Director Robyn Gatens said at a press conference at NASDAQ on Friday that NASA will allow two flights a year for space tourists, or "private astronauts".

A round-trip ticket likely will cost an estimated $58 million.

Friday's announcement marks the first time NASA is allowing private astronauts on board. By commercializing the station, NASA will get about $35,000 each seat, which can be used to pursue more ambitious missions in the future.

It means that private companies will be able to take "private astronauts" to the ISS for up to 30 days.

These travelers would be ferried to the orbiter exclusively by the two USA companies now developing transport vehicles for NASA: SpaceX, with its Crew Dragon capsule, and Boeing, which is building one called Starliner. In recent years, the company has been planning to create space tourism an open and commercial venture that can make anyone visit the Space.

If you have over $50 million to spare, and have dreamed of going to the International Space Station, such a fantasy could be turned into reality as soon as 2020.

That is the average rate the companies will bill Nasa for taking the space adventurers to the ISS. It was built in 1998 in collaboration with Russia, Canada, Japan and other European nations. But the United States owns and controls most of the modules. In 2001 Dennis Tito, an American businessman, paid around $20 million to go to the space station on a Russian rocket.

Our commercial partner, SpaceX completed its 17th resupply mission to the International Space Station on June 3. That could include flying trinkets to space and then selling them on Earth. This will allow us to focus resources on our Artemis missions to land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024.

On May 31, our administrator Jim Bridenstine tried his hand at a virtual landing on the Moon in the ten-story Vertical Motion Simulator at our Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley.
