Near-record Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' forecast for this summer

Rows of farm land near Holly Bluff Miss. are covered with backwater flooding last month

The annual Gulf of Mexico "slow zone" - a device of oxygen-depleted water off the Louisiana and Texas coasts that's execrable to sea life - would possibly perhaps perhaps be the second-largest on chronicle this summer season, scientists announced Monday.

The resulting low oxygen levels near the bottom are insufficient to support most marine life and have long-term impacts to living marine resources that are unable to leave the area.

The low-oxygen, or hypoxic, area is likely to cover about 7,800 square miles (20,200 square kilometers) - roughly the size of MA or Slovenia, NOAA said. The record is 8,776 square miles.

The forecast was released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which funds the scientists' work, and is based on U.S. Geological Survey river flow and nutrient data.

'While this year's zone will be larger than usual because of the flooding, the long-term trend is still not changing, ' University of MI aquatic ecologist Don Scavia, professor emeritus at the School for Environment and Sustainability, said in a news release.

This could furthermore be measured right through an annual July cruise by Nancy Rabalais of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium.

According to the NOAA, a dead zone the size of New Jersey has been identified in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Environmental Protection Agency's Hypoxia Task Force set a target goal of reducing the five-year average size of the dead zone down to 1,900 square miles, but that figure is far from today's reality.

So, until the water stirs up and the dead zone goes away later in the year, then perhaps this will mean an economic boon to our local seafood economy. Heavy rains fueled end to-chronicle flooding along the Mississippi River for the length of the spring.

We need to create and use more ecologically friendly fertilizers so that when this flooding happens, it doesn't take it to the Gulf to create these dead zones in the first place.

While nutrient inputs to the Gulf of Mexico vary from year to year because of natural swings in precipitation and discharge, USGS also tracks longer-term gradual changes in nitrate and phosphorus loading into the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River. When those nutrients reach the mouth of the river and flow into the warm waters of the Gulf, they prompt an overgrowth of algae.

The record set in 2017 is 8,776 square miles (22,700 square kilometers), a bit smaller than Turkey.
