NASA Orbiter Spots ‘Star Trek’ Symbol On Mars

NASA Spots 'Star Trek' Starfleet Logo 'Dune Footprints' on Mars

Seemingly stamped in the ruddy sands of the famous Red Planet, a familiar chevron emblem resembling Star Trek's iconic Starfleet logo has been recently spotted by NASA's intrepid Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and it has Star Wars folks a bit anxious.

These curious chevron shapes in southeast Hellas Planitia are the result of a complex story of dunes, lava, and wind.

However the U.S. space agency has said dunes, lava and wind are responsible for the curious chevron shape. Then, an eruption occurred: lava flowed around the dunes, but not enough to cover them. The interplay of dunes, wind, and lava made the particular chevron look so prominent, according to a statement from the University.

This Martian land was once home to great sand dunes, slowly sliding across the ground like they do on Earth.

"Eventually, the sand piles that were the dunes migrated away, leaving these "footprints" in the lava plain", the HiRISE website states.

"Footprints" were left on the surface, also known as "dune casts".

Researchers previous year found hundreds of crescent-shaped depressions on the surface of the Red Planet.

The image, which was captured by the HiRISE camera built into the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, quickly spread online and, as you might expect, has become a favorite of science fiction fans.

It serves as a vital communications relay for NASA's Curiosity rover and InSight lander and is expected to support the Mars 2020 rover mission when that craft lands on the Red Planet.

Scientists working with the HiRISE instrument have spent years studying the features they see in Mars images, and they think they have a good sense of how this particular shape came to be.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, on the show, used the sighting to challenge the Star Wars franchise, tweeting that "We beat you!"
