More than 600 US Companies Ask Trump to Lift Tariffs on China

Will the Real Tariff Man Please Stand Down

Walmart, Target and more than 600 other companies have urged US President Donald Trump to resolve the trade dispute with China, saying tariffs hurt American businesses and consumers, Reuters reports.

'We know firsthand that the additional tariffs will have a significant, negative and long-term impact on USA companies, farmers, families and the economy of the United States, ' they said.

No one would challenge the notion that Washington has the right to take a tough stand during trade negotiations, including by threatening to employ tariffs against its economic partners, which is the way nearly all United States administrations have behaved in the past.

Mr Trump has said he wants to meet Mr Xi there and will decide on whether to extend tariffs to nearly all Chinese imports after that.

According to a press release issued by Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, a bipartisan campaign against levies, 520 companies and 141 associations said in the letter that they "remain concerned about the escalation of tit-for-tat tariffs" between the United States and China.

According to the White House, Mr Trump decided not to launch a major trade war against its southern neighbour and key strategic ally and economic partner after Mexico agreed to increase efforts to control the flow of migrants from Central America and in particular to hold those seeking U.S. entry inside Mexico until their claims have been processed.

The meeting comes as the President is considering whether to go ahead with threatened tariff increases in his trade war with China.

On a Tuesday (June 11th) tweet, US President Donald Trump said, "Tariffs are a great negotiating tool", however his comments came forth just a day after he had pledged to impose a 25 percent tariff hike on all of the Chinese imports, unless Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a G20 summit scheduled later this month in Japan.

Walmart, the largest USA private sector employer and the world's largest retailer, has said that tariffs will increase prices for U.S. consumers. The U.S. and China have had no trade talks since early May.

"Trade overall has been good for Americans, good for consumers.and I realise it gets criticised at times,"Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon said last week".

Hundreds of American retailers and manufacturers are urging President Trump to resolve the trade dispute with China, saying tariffs on Chinese goods will hurt the USA economy and consumers.

The companies and groups said in the letter that they support Mr Trump's efforts to hold trading partners accountable, but that both sides will lose in an escalated trade war.
