Labour narrowly fail in bid to redirect Brexit

Pound tumbles on Brexit agony as trade fight weighs on Wall Street

Change UK leader Anna Soubry asked what the current government could do to prevent a future prime minister proroguing Parliament to pass a no-deal Brexit.

The motion was submitted by the Labour Party during the so-called opposition day debate and had the backing of former cabinet minister Oliver Letwin and leaders of the Scottish National Party, the Welsh Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats party and the Green Party.

"It will introduce a safety valve in the Brexit process and it will be a reminder to all Conservative leadership candidates that this house will take every step necessary to prevent a no-deal", he added.

The Labour MP backed her party's efforts to take control of the parliamentary agenda, allowing it to table legislation to thwart the United Kingdom leaving without any agreement on the October 31 deadline.

The result will be seen as a victory for the Government and for those who believe that no deal should be kept as an option in the ongoing European Union strategy.

Earlier, at his official campaign launch, Mr Johnson said both the main parties faced an "existential threat" unless Britain left the European Union by the latest deadline of October 31.

Stride replied: "The future position of the government, of course, will be determined by a new prime minister, but I feel confident from all that I have heard from those who are putting themselves forward for that position that all of them recognise that a deal is the best way forward".

Keir Starmer, Labour's Shadow Brexit Secretary, said: "This is a disappointing, narrow defeat".

"But this is just the start, not the end of our efforts to block no deal".

The vote, however, did show that the disapproval of a no-deal Brexit runs across party lines in certain cases as 10 Tory MPs backed Labor's motion. "For me, the real risk of no-deal is it triggers a serious decline in our competitiveness for the long-term".

According to him, the threat of a no deal Brexit is a powerful negotiation tool and the United Kingdom needs to be better than the current deal.

Johnson is considered one of the biggest frontrunners in the contest as he has many more endorsements from Tory MPs than any other candidate. Had the motion been passed, it would also have had a major impact on the Conservative leadership race, wiping out the favored policy of some candidates, but as things stand, the prospect of a no-deal Brexit is now a lot more realistic.
