Kyrie Irving opting out of Celtics contract

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving is changing representation and is expected to partner with Roc Nation Sports, league sources told ESPN. Early Wednesday, Irving did not opt in to a $21 million deal with the Celtics, instead opting to hit the free-agent market.

Shams Charania of The Athetlic "broke" the news Wednesday that Irving will indeed become a free agent in the coming days.

Irving has always been the subject of speculation and that only grew when the Brooklyn Nets, who are said to have a strong interest in the veteran guard, paved the way to have two max contract slots this summer. Now, Irving has reportedly made another big decision. "The Knicks and Nets are both still interested in signing Durant and Irving together, league sources said".

As Charania reports, Irving can sign with any National Basketball Association team or sign a new deal with the Celtics when free agency opens. "That concept was placed in some measure of doubt when Kevin Durant - the most prominent of the potential 2019 free agents - suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon in Game 5 of the NBA Finals Monday night".

Irving, 27, demanded a trade out of Cleveland in 2017, with Boston supposedly being one of his preferred destinations.

Irving had a stellar season for the Celtics on the floor, leading the team with 23.8 points per game while adding a career-high 6.9 assists and five rebounds per contest, earning him a spot on the All-NBA Second Team. Able to guard players as diverse as Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo in spurts, Baynes also started spacing out to the 3-point line over the last two seasons.
