Jupiter's moons will be visible from Earth this month

The entire body of Moon-sized Io as it casts a black shadow is captured here alongside the planet Jupiter in this

This is the yearly occurrence when Jupiter, Earth and the Sun are arranged in a straight line, with Earth in the middle.

For space lovers around the world, Nasa has a message for you this month: Look up!

The best time to view the planet, which has 79 moons in total, will be the night of 10 June.

Aside from the Sun, Jupiter is the largest celestial body in our solar system.

Jupiter is making its closest approach to earth this month. So, mark your calendars for Monday, as it will be the best time of the year to see it. But it will be visible all month long, rising at dusk and staying in sight throughout the night.

"This happens every year when the Earth catches up with Jupiter in our orbit around the sun". It will be the brightest visible object in the sky aside from the moon. And, unlike other astronomical phenomena, your geographical location on Earth shouldn't impact your ability view Jupiter, provided you have clear skies and minimal light pollution. If you have a slightly more powerful telescope, you may even be able to see the Great Red Spot, a colossal storm on Jupiter that now appears to be shrinking.

If you use binoculars or a small telescope, you should be able to see the planet's four largest moons and possibly glimpse the banded clouds around Jupiter, the agency said.

As a backup, and an even more detailed view, NASA's Juno spacecraft satellite is now orbiting Jupiter, and has captured some spectacular footage, which you can check out below.
