Huawei's Next Laptop Killed by U.S. Ban: What's Next?

Huawei’s blacklisting just killed its first product

Richard Yu told CNBC that its launch of the Matebook device had been indefinitely put on hold.

Huawei was reportedly planning to release the new laptop this week, but an executive said the company canceled the launch due to us sanctions against the company. The Trump administration placed Huawei on an Entity List in May that restricts its access to USA technology.

Huawei has also "paused production at its personal-computer business because of restrictions on buying USA components", the Wall Street Journal reported.

The US government's clamp-down on Huawei has produced its first victim, with the Chinese tech firm canceling the launch of an upcoming product over the trade blacklist.

Prior to the comments Tuesday, The Information reported that Huawei could not release the new MateBook laptop as a result of lacking access to Intel chips and Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Yu called the situation "unfortunate".

The Global Times-which is part of China's state-run media-published a story disputing some of the reporting about the laptop launch.

Huawei has denied the accusations, and company Deputy Chairman Ken Hu reportedly told employees that the Commerce Department's decision is "the latest move in the campaign against Huawei, waged by the US government for political reasons".

That ban, imposed on Huawei and 68 of its affiliates, prevents the company from importing components from American companies without government approval.

Huawei has temporarily stopped developing Windows laptops, claims DigiTimes.

According to Ars Technica, Intel and ARM have also recently made moves to distance themselves from Huawei.

Without an operating system to power this laptop, Huawei had no other option than to push back the unveiling of the device, at least until it finds an alternative.
