Huawei has reportedly filed trademarks for its Android replacement OS

Tencent, Xiaomi, Oppo Reportedly Testing Huawei’s HongMeng OS

Since then, the company has been racing to figure out how to deal with the US-led opposition which threatens to cut it off from parts suppliers to, arguably worst of all, Google - which means existing Huawei smartphones couldn't get Android updates or security fixes, and new Huawei smartphones would not have access to Android or the Google Play Store at all.

China's Huawei has applied to trademark its "Hongmeng" operating system (OS) in at least nine countries and Europe, presumably preparing to roll it out after the Android ban.

The latest patent in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Global Brand Database reveals that a request to trademark the HongMeng name has been filled in a broad list of countries including Australia, Canada, Cambodia, the European Union, Indonesia, India, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand.

Data from a United Nations body showed that Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is aiming to trademark the OS in at least nine countries and Europe, in a sign it may be deploying a back-up plan in key markets as USA sanctions threaten its business model. It has also done so for Peru, according to the country's anti-trust agency Indecopi.

In response, Huawei, the world's second-biggest phone maker, has been ramping up plans for its own operating system, which it wants to release by early 2020, according to Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's consumer division. Now, more evidence of this has surfaced, the Chinese tech giant has filed to trademark its Hongmeng mobile OS.

At home, Huawei applied for a Hongmeng trademark in August previous year and received a nod last month, according to a filing on China's intellectual property administration's website.

Huawei has come under mounting scrutiny for over a year, led by USA allegations that "back doors" in its routers, switches and other gear could allow China to spy on US communications. According to the company, it has around 270 million monthly active users on its self-operated AppGallery platform. "They're doing it by their own desire because, for many of them, Huawei is one of their major customers", he said.

Although Google said existing Huawei phones will continue to receive Android security updates to protect the devices from viruses and hacking, the Chinese firm had to act to safeguard its plans for future product launches in worldwide markets.
