Google is changing how Google Photos and Google Drive work soon

Google Photos stops syncing with Google Drive in July

If you use both Google Photos and Google Drive, you likely know that the two services are linked together.

Google announced today that it will no longer automatically sync photos between its Drive and Photos services.

These changes will take effect this July and have been made to ensure that there are no duplicate photos in both services. The main one is that the photos and videos from Drive will not automatically show up on Photos and new photos and videos from Photos will not be added to your Drive anymore. "We've heard feedback that the connection between these services is confusing, so next month, we're making some changes to simplify the experience across Drive and Photos". Similarly, new photos and videos you add in Google Photos will be added to the Photos folder in Drive.

In a bid to make things simpler, for regular users and G Suite customers, Google will now implement a more "granular control" over the services to prevent accidental changes and deletion of items across these two products. It will also disallow you to put all the photos and videos stored in your Photos app to your PC by simply syncing your Drive folder. Once copied, the files are not connected; in other words, if you delete a photo in Drive it will not delete its copy in Photos or vice versa. At the same time, anything added to the Photos folder in Google Drive won't copy across to Photos.

The company also mentioned in its blog post that the Backup and Sync app for Windows and Mac will continue to work. However, it is set to bring some inconvenience especially for the users who often access their memories directly from Google Drive or view their important photo or video content stored on Drive directly through the Google Photos app. "As before, items uploaded in High Quality won't count against your account storage quota, and items uploaded using Backup and Sync in Original Quality to both services will count only once towards your quota".
