Froome to miss Tour de France after crash at Criterium du Dauphine

12 2019 shows an ambulance car in which Team Ineos rider Great Britain's Christopher Froome receives medical treatment after falling on a training run ahead of the fourth stage of the 71st edition of the Criterium du Dauphine cycl

Britain's four-times victor of the Yellow Jersey was airlifted to hospital with multiple injuries - including a broken leg, broken elbow and fractured ribs - after a crash that shook cycling.

Dave Brailsford, Ineos team principal, praised Froome's preparation for an attempt at winning his fifth Tour de France title - something he will now be prevented from trying to achieve this year.

In five of the last seven years, the victor of the Dauphine has gone on to also take the Tour De France title - with Froome doing so three times himself.

Froome missed the Giro d'Italia to allow himself more time to prepare for the Tour de France, which he had been aiming to win for a record-tying fifth time.

His team confirmed in a statement that he had come off his bike during a reconnaissance of the day's ride and had withdrawn from the race.

Froome's Twitter account later confirmed he was undergoing surgery to fix "multiple fractures". He has also suffered fractured ribs.

"He's hit a wall at 60km an hour, something like that".

Froome's wife Michelle said Froome was involved in a "high-speed crash" while scoping out the route for Wednesday's time trial around Roanne.

Brailsford later added in the statement that the team's primary focus was ensuring that Froome gets the best care. He was treated quickly by race paramedics who happened to be nearby in Roanne, a town in central France, and was airlifted to St Étienne University Hospital for further treatment.

"One of our big strengths on this team is coming together in hard moments, and we will ensure we do everything possible to support Chris and his family". Long-time Froome teammate Geraint Thomas is the defending champion.

The 34-year-old was using the race in Roanne, France, as part of his build-up to the Tour, which starts on 6 July.
