Ford Motor Co said on Wednesday its North American unit will spend $180 million to correct a suspension issue in Explorer vehicles.

Ford will remove and replace left and right-hand rear suspension toe link.

'A fracture of a rear toe link significantly diminishes steering control, increasing the risk of a crash'.

Separately Ford said it was recalling about 123,000 F-150 vehicles because of a transmission calibration issue.

The recall will affect about 1.2 million vehicles in the USA, 28,000 in Canada and one SUV in Mexico.

The reference number for the Ford F-150 recall is 19S19.

They were built between May 2010 and January 2017 at the Chicago assembly plant, the automaker said. But given that all Ford Explorers here in the Philippines come from the United States, we wouldn't be surprised if examples of the 2011 - 2017 model years sold here may need to be recalled by Ford.

Ford said the vehicles could have the same suspension issues and it is recalling a total of 12,000 cars.

The company added: 'Depending on vehicle speed, an abrupt transmission downshift to first gear without warning could result in loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash'.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this issue.

Vehicles that did not undergo the 19S07 reprogramming are not affected by the current recall and will receive updated software under the existing 19S07 program, Ford said.

The model: Next up are 2009-2016 Ford Econolines with 5.4-liter engines.

Affected vehicles were built at the Dearborn Assembly Plant from May 7, 2012 to October 27, 2013, and the Kansas City Assembly Plant, April 18, 2012 to November 18, 2013. Those vehicles have a weld in the clutch that could fail, preventing them from moving.

The company will also replace the coast clutch cylinder and the single-engaging coast one-way clutch for the 5.4-liter engine for loss of motive power issue.

The problem: A link in the rear suspension may crack from heavy use. The Ford reference number for this recall is 19S20.
