Facebook to pay users who allow access to phone data

"When analysing data from this app, we reference other information Facebook has about you, such as your age, gender and you use Facebook Company Products".

The social media giant is working with its long-time partner Applause to manage the logistics of this market research app.

Through the program, Facebook will collect and analyze information including details about the apps installed on a participant's phone; the amount of time spent using those apps; participants' country, device and network time; and app activity names. If someone clicks on an ad, they'll will be asked to register - and if they qualify - will be asked to download the Study with Facebook app from the Google Play Store. "Study from Facebook" is available only for Android users above 18 years of age in the USA and India. We're offering transparency, compensating all participants, and keeping people's information safe and secure. It turns out the app marketed to teens, and used a certificate to bypass the App Store for more access to iPhones - a big no-no for Apple, of course.

Facebook said the app will not be used to serve people ads, and information will not be shared with third-party companies - a line the company has been walking carefully since its Cambridge Analytica scandal past year that exposed the data of millions of Facebook users to an outside political research firm. Which means that Facebook will target certain users for this market research study and it's not open for all.

The company previously rolled out two similar apps that tracked what activities people did on their phones.

Facebook is a company that has its own share of drama, especially in regards to user data and privacy.

The tech giant is launching a new program that will pay people who give the company access to track their information.

We've learned that what people expect when they sign up to participate in market research has changed, and we've built this app to match those expectations.

To get started with Study From Facebook, interested participants can download the app from the Play Store.

The company may claim through some clever wordplay that this data it collects through Study won't be sold or used for targeted ads, but make no mistake that Facebook still plans to profit from it.

The other app, called Onavo Protect, was a virtual private network service used to keep information private in public settings - but it was also collecting information about app usage and sending it to Facebook.
