Democrats Announce Debate Night Participants, Warren Gets 'Kiddie Table'

Democratic 2020 First Debate Lineup, Schedule: Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden Will Go Head-to-Head

The lineup for the next night features Bernie Sanders, Kamala (KAH'-mah-lah) Harris, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tuh-juhj), Michael Bennet, Marianne Williamson, Eric Swalwell, Kirsten Gillibrand (KEER'-sten JIHL'-uh-brand), Andrew Yang and John Hickenlooper.

Former US vice-president Biden, the unequivocal front runner, and liberal Senator Sanders, who is polling in second, will be among the 10 candidates sharing the stage on the second night. Sanders, I-Vt., and Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend Mayor Buttigieg are four of the five highest-polling candidates in recent national and early-voting state polling.

Featured on the first night will be Massachusetts Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio.

Once the schedule was made public, Twitter lit up with posts by candidates including Warren, who said she was "looking forward" to the opportunity to "discuss my plans for big, structural change in this country".

The requirements were needed to limit the number of candidates on the debate stage after a historically large field of 24 Democratic hopefuls jumped in the race for the nomination to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in 2020. The two rivals have been leading the crowded Democratic primary field in almost all national polling.

Trump, speaking on Fox News on Friday, escalated his attack on Biden, saying "everybody knows that Joe Biden does not have what it takes" and that former vice president struggles to attract crowds to his rallies. Each night will have the same debate format, as candidates will be allowed one-minute responses to questions and 30-second follow-up answers. A lot of them have met both requirements. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). "I see that Bernie Sanders is not doing well at all, I would have frankly liked to have run against him, I don't see the other ones".

The DNC on Thursday announced 20 candidates qualified for the debates, the first of a dozen it has planned for the primary. They will be broadcast live by NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo from 9 p.m.to 11 p.m. both nights, and on NBC and Telemundo's digital platforms.

A manual random drawing to determine the lineups was held at NBC News headquarters in NY.
