Chandraayan 2, India’s second moon mission, will be launched on July 15

Chandrayaan-2: India unveils spacecraft for second moon mission

The lander would soft-land on the Moon at a predetermined site and deploy the rover.

The mission costs ₹603 crore for the spacecraft system and ₹375 crore for the launcher, a GSLV-MKIII.

During the launch, the rover will be housed inside the lander and the whole thing will then be stacked on top of the orbiter. Once there, it will make an orbit around the moon for 27 days, before the lander makes an attempt to de-orbit. He said this while addressing over 150 regional, national and worldwide media persons at Isro headquarters, Bengaluru on Wednesday.

"The last 15 minutes to the landing are going to be the most terrifying moments for us", ISRO Chairman K. Sivan told media on Wednesday.

"This 15 minutes flight is the most complex mission ISRO has ever undertaken", he said.

After a journey of more than 50 days, ISRO's lander will attempt a "soft", controlled landing on the lunar surface on around September 6. The mission featured a lunar orbiter and an impactor but did not perform a landing on the Moon.

The former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair while speaking on the mission had, "Chandrayaan-2 is going to be an exciting mission as far as the Indian space programme is concerned". The spot is located between the craters Manzinus C and Simpelius N. Four hours after it has safely touched down, the lander doors will open to release India's first lunar rover onto the Moon's surface.

Chandrayaan 2 has three modules namely Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan).

The planned sequence of events on September 6-7 on the Moon, as displayed on the new Chandrayaan 2 page on ISRO's website.

From the time of Lander landing on the surface to theRover to come out and land on the surface will take four hours, according to him. Nasa's Deep Space Network (DSN) is a worldwide network of U.S. spacecraft communication facilities, located in California, Madrid in Spain and Australia's Canberra, that supports the United States interplanetary spacecraft missions.

"It will spend 14 earth days on the Moon, carrying out different scientific experiments". The rover is expected to send data through the lander. Sivan explained that one side of the rover wheel has Asoka chakra and other has ISRO symbol that will be imprinted on the moon as it rover moves on the moon's surface. These payloads are expected to analyse the water on the lunar surface, monitor lunar quakes, dig and study minerals and more.

Chandrayaan-2 will be India's first planetary mission to be led by two women - the project director is design engineer Vanitha Muthayaa, and the mission director is Ritu Karidhal, who was formerly the deputy operations director of Mars Orbiter Mission.

As of now, all tests, including the final vibration and acoustic tests, are complete, said Sivan.

Sivan said 60% of this went to industries and universities around the country that worked on the mission. From its launch to the soft landing, the entire mission is set to take about 58 days. The first pictures from the spacecraft are expected on 19 July.
