British Home Secretary signs U.S. extradition order for Julian Assange

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has already signed the Wikileaks' founder extradition order.

He is now serving a 50-week sentence in jail for skipping bail when he entered the embassy in 2012.

"But yesterday I signed the extradition order and certified it and that will be going in front of the courts tomorrow".

"It's a decision ultimately for the courts but there is a very important part of it for the Home Secretary and I want to see justice done at all times".

A hearing related to the USA request had been set for last month, but, because Assange was too ill to attend, it is now taking place tomorrow.

Assange faces 18 counts, including charges under the US Espionage Act for encouraging, receiving and publishing national defense information in concert with ex-Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

Assange, 47, who is serving a 50-week sentence in London's Belmarsh Prison for jumping bail in Britain, is scheduled to face an extradition hearing Friday on the U.S. request.

Swedish prosecutors had dropped their rape investigation in 2017 but reopened it after Ecuador withdrew its offer of asylum to Mr. Assange in April this year and allowed Scotland Yard to arrest him.

He insisted that Assange's supporters would "never give up" the fight to stop his extradition to the USA and secure his safe release from United Kingdom custody.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the U.K.'s top diplomat said he would not stand in the way of Assange's extradition, telling CBS' "Face the Nation" recently that he had no sympathy for the 47-year-old.

Sweden also seeks him for questioning about an alleged rape, which Mr Assange has denied.

The "first real confrontation of arguments" in court will not be for several weeks or months, WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Hrafnsson said, according to Agence France-Presse.

That case has been dropped, but he now faces 18 charges relating to publishing secret material from United States military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Javid's certification simply means the extradition request is a valid one but it will be for a judge to decide whether Assange can be sent to the United States, taking into account issues such as whether it would breach his human rights.
