A Large Mass Of An Asteroid Discovered On The Moon

This false-color graphic shows the topography of the far side of the Moon. The warmer colors indicate high topography and the bluer colors indicate low topography. The South Pole Aitken basin is shown by the shades of blue. The dashed circle shows

This mysterious anomaly beneath the moon's crater is located near the Moon's South Pole-Aitken basin, and researchers believe that it may hide the metal that came from an asteroid that crashed into the Moon.

Ph.D., assistant professor of planetary geophysics in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences.

As you'll spot in the trailer, the moon isn't a great place to be, where "new nightmares have emerged from the shadows of our long-forgotten moon". Scientists observed an increase in the gravitational tug of the Moon in this area and thus, deduced the metal from the asteroid that formed the adjoining area of the South Pole-Aitken basin that may be still embedded in the Moon's surface.

But when the team compared these findings with the lunar topography data collected by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the results showed something else: a mass of about 2.18 quintillion kilograms (that's a number with 18 zeroes), extending more than 300 kilometres (184 miles) below the surface.

The unknown dense mass is weighing down the carter's basin floor by half a mile. It is one of the biggest impact craters of the known solar system but, because it is located on the far side of the moon, can not be viewed directly from Earth.

"We did the math and showed that a sufficiently dispersed core of the asteroid that made the impact could remain suspended in the Moon's mantle until the present day", James said. Scientists believe that the crater was formed 4 billion years ago.

Additional research and missions will be needed to confirm the presence of asteroid deposits beneath the South Pole-Aitken basin.

The South Pole-Aitken basin - the largest crater in the Solar System - is a huge impact structure on the far side of the Moon.

The research was published earlier this year in Geophysical Research Letters.

James said that the South Pole-Aitken basin - thought to have been created about 4 billion years ago - is the largest preserved crater in the solar system.

The other mission was the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL), which involved two spacecraft - GRAIL A and GRAIL B - working in tandem to detect variations in the strength of the moon's gravitational field.

Another explanation is that, following the impact that formed the basin, a huge ocean of metal-rich magma pooled inside of the lunar crust and solidified into a dense slab. They tried computer simulations of large asteroid impacts and found that under the right conditions, pieces of an iron-nickel core might have been dispersed into the upper mantle. While larger impacts have occurred (including some on Earth) the moon's unchanging environment is much better at preserving the evidence of impacts.
